At one pont as he drove eastward, Rutledge had stopped along a road in Hampshire to offer a lift to a woman trudging back to her village with her marketing in her basket. He had needed to hear a human voice, someone who knew nothing of him or his past.

-- A LONELY DEATH, the latest Inspector Rutledge novel by Charles Todd

  1. I read this book late last year and really enjoyed it but I can't remember that particular quote (not surprising, I can barely remember what I did yesterday)

  2. This snippet is from the beginning third. Like all the other Rutledges I've read, it's a world a like to visit. Just don't ask me what I did yesterday, either!

  3. Wonder what he done or what is he running from?

  4. Since Inspector Rutledge carries his own demon with him at all times (he hears the voice of a Scotsman who he ordered shot for desertion in WWI), it's not unusual for him to want to escape that and hear a living human voice.

I really admire these broody psychological studies set after WWI. Todd, who writes with his mother, is very good at capturing what the mood of the country may well have been like after this War to End All Wars.

  6. Gia, it's a central component of the series; great "whydunit" stories.

    Enjoyed your teasers!

  7. Andrea, this is a mystery series I've enjoyed since the beginning.

Thanks for the link to your blog; love that you also review manga!
